Introduction to Geoinformation Processing

The course consists of two parts::

  • Lecture "Introduction to Geoinformation Processing"
  • Exercise "Introduction to Geoinformation Processing"

The lecture communicates the theoretical basics of space-oriented information systems. With applied examples from Landscape Planning the application of geoinformation systems (GIS) will be learned constitutive on the lecture and the relevancy to practice will be recognised.

After completing the module students will have a basic knowledge on computer-aided spatial analysis and presentation methods in landscape and environmental planning. Furthermore they can appraise the methods' adaptability in landscape planning and answer concrete problems with GIS independent.

Geoinformation Systems

The course consists of two parts:

GIS-Application in Environmental Planning (GIS I)
The first part of the course introduces and expands the fields of data acquisition, analysis and presentation of space-oriented data. Adapted editing of complex space-oriented problems will be performed with interactive constructed functional models of the ModelBuilder. Moreover, open source GIS solutions will be presented. As a new way of data presentation and analysis, 3D-visualization is part of the course.

Landscape Analysis and Assessment (GIS II)
The second part of the course focuses on the shaping of space-oriented geodata. Exercises in the context of environmental analysis and assessment will be arranged. Among other things this includes the assessment of favour and disfavour locations, area-shaping and the analysis of countryside structures. Different raster- and vector-based methods will be applied.

The module enables students to

  • solve independant complex issues concerning Environmental Planning and Analysis with geoinformation systems (GIS)
  • apply GIS as an instrument for landscape assessment, prognoses and visualisation
  • critically estimate potentials and limits of practices and techniques
  • apply techniques in different practical planning instruments
  • identify and formulate new research approaches for environmental planning and analysis with GIS
