Jewish Cemetery Berlin-Weißensee

The cemetery of Weißensee was established by the Jewish Community of Berlin in 1880 and is continuously in use since then. More than 115,000 people have been buried there to this day. Today the cemetery of Weißensee is the biggest Jewish cemetery of Europe.
Aim of the project is to record the cemetery in all its historical, art-historical, ecological and political dimensions. The international outstanding importance of the Jewish cemetery of Berlin-Weißensee shall be described and established by detailed information of all relevant facts and their grading into the Jewish culture in past and present, into the European history and of the concerns of the preservation of historical monuments and nature conservation. At the same time an overview of maintenance activities that are appropriate, practicable and necessary, is developed. Thereby the special character of the monument is ensured in the long term. In the pre-project the digitalization of the two burial grounds A1 and U4 and the building of a GIS-based data base are carried out. Besides first evaluations the determination of time and costs for the whole project is important. In the overall project the whole area will be digitized, comprehensive historical analyses and analyses regarding content will be carried out and required maintenance methods are configured.
Final aim is the concept of the application for UNESCO world heritage.
