Description

In the arid regions of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan riparian forests are severely threatened by intensive human use of land and water resources, with negative consequences for biodiversity and human well-being. The lowering of the water table, in particular, affects the generative reproduction of the stands from seeds and, likely, the vegetative regeneration from root suckers. This will lead to a decrease in the stands' capability to acclimatize, resist stress and adapt to environmental changes. Continuing anthropogenic pressure will shift the ecosystem functions and services towards a tipping point, whose transgression will result in irreversible changes of the ecosystem and, finally, in degradation of the forests.

Sub-project 3 identifies (1) tipping points from remote sensing-based indicators and (2) degredation status of Tugay vegetation from time series analysis. In close cooperation with our project partners and local stakeholders sustainable and successful management strategies need to be found.
