The detection of habitat structures of river systems as well as their development and therefore the possibility of target-oriented intervention are key aspects of the flow of rivers to migrating fishes and thus a technical basis for the implementation of arrangements under the coalition agreement. The Federal Institute of Hydrology intends to create a vegetation inventory for the federal waterways valid for a defined time. On this basis shall, in determined periods, these data be collected again. From this data derived changes in the structural diversity of vegetation classes and the dynamics of development of both fauna flora habitats as well as Neophyte stocks provide necessary basis information, for the long-term ecological development of the transport option "waterway" and assures the implementation of the Water Framework Directive requirements. Developments and deficits can thereby detected and identified, thus provide the basis for improved forecasts. For these purposes allow satellite data large-scale observations regarding the network of relevant structures, in particular in submarginal sectors. Especially the satellite system RapidEye (active since 2009) is capable of flexible and high-resolution multispectral data collection and therefore offers a possibly cheaper alternative to very expensive aerial photography. The aim of the project is to evaluate the potential of the RapidEye data regarding biotope mapping, the mapping of Neophyte stocks and fauna flora habitats and to develop a method for an automated classification of habitat types (based on Federal Institute of Hydrology key) on federal waterways with RapidEye data.
